Inclusive Sailing for Everyone: Malta Sailing Federation Launches Erasmus+ Project

Since the introduction of four Hansa 303 boats, donated to the Malta Sailing Federation by Yachting Malta and distributed to its affiliated sailing clubs, we have seen numerous athletes with disabilities and individuals previously excluded from the sport try sailing for the first time. This progress is thanks to the dedication of all participating sailing clubs, which have organised taster sessions and open days to promote inclusive sailing.

To further support this initiative, the Malta Sailing Federation has launched a Job Shadowing Project under the Erasmus+ KA182-SPO Mobility Program, co-funded by the European Union. The project, titled “Inclusive Sailing for Everyone,” aims to enhance the skills of volunteers in delivering accessible sailing instruction.

A team of volunteers and coaches, led by the Federation’s Inclusive Officer, Mr. Joseph Muscat, and supported by MSF Treasurer Mr. Chris Bajada, will participate in this job-shadowing initiative. Each affiliated club will be represented by one member: Anouschka Vell (VSC), Elizabeth Kohl (MYSC), Paolo Farrugia (RMYC), and Roberto Darmanin (BSC). The program is hosted by Lega Navale Italiana, Palermo branch.

The primary goal is to promote both inclusion and environmental sustainability through sailing, with a special focus on empowering volunteers to work effectively with individuals with disabilities.

As part of the project, Mr. Muscat and Mr. Bajada recently conducted a preparatory visit and attended the event “Una Vela Senza Esclusi” (“A Sail Without Exclusions”), organised by the Palermo club. A fleet of Hansa 303 boats took part in this impressive regatta.

During the visit, they met with key figures from Lega Navale Italiana Palermo, including Mr. Nicola Vitello (President), Mr. Carmelo Forestieri (National President, Hansa Italia), Mr. Fabio Cosenza (Sport Director), and Mr. Beppe Tischi (FIV President of the VII Zone – Sicily). They assessed the facilities, joined the race committee on the water, and engaged in discussions to tailor a program specifically suited for the Maltese volunteers.

This job-shadowing experience promises to be highly beneficial for our volunteers and coaches. Lega Navale Italiana Palermo brings extensive experience, strong infrastructure, and a well-established program that will serve as a valuable model for Inclusive Sailing in Malta.
