The BSC Spring Regatta sponsored by Crosscraft came to an end on Sunday 24th April, afternoon with a fleet of a hundred sailors having raced six races over the weekend.
With warm temperatures and light winds, racing was pleasant for some, but frustrating for others who prefer rougher weather conditions. The fleet consisted of Optimist, Laser and Miracle dinghies.
For the Optimist Novice class, Luca Scicluna from Birzebbugia Sailing Club, snatched first place in the regatta, while Timothy DeCesare and Michael Wilson from Malta Young Sailors Club placed second and third respectively. With regards to the Optimist Novice Girls class, Emily Mallia and Aneese Bugeja, both from Birzebbugia Sailing Club placed first and second whilst Katrina Briffa from Malta Young Sailors Club secured third place.
On to the Optimist Cadets (U 12) class, Nathan Montebello placed first, Corey Joyce placed second, a one-two win for Birzebbugia Sailing Club, and Malta Young Sailors Club’s Michael Cremona placed third.
Timmy Vassallo, Malta Young Sailors Club, was crowned first in the Optimist Open Class, followed by Jonas Micallef from Royal Malta Yacht Club securing second and Nicolai Bartolo, Birzebbugia Sailing Club, coming in third. Birzebbugia Sailing Club also had their girls Emily Fenech holding on to first place and Alexandrea Nagrudnaya placing third in the Optimist Girls Open class. Katrina Micallef, Royal Malta Yacht Club, placed second.
The Laser class had a mix of winners ranking from all clubs including National Sailing School (NSS) Bhopal of India. Indeed, Rikita Dangi and Neha Thakur placed first and second respectively in the ICLA4 Girls class as well as a third with Rikita Dangi in the open ICLA4 class.
Benjamin Vassallo topped the open ICLA4 class whilst Michela Mizzi secured a third in the ICLA4 Girls class, both from Malta Young Sailors Club.
On the other hand siblings Shaun Aquilina and Lacey Aquilina from Brizebbugia Sailing Club placed first and third respectively in the ICLA6 class, whilst having Dimitrios Pipi from Royal Malta Yacht Club gapping the Aquilina’s by placing second. Lacey Aquilina was also crowned a first in the ICLA6 Girl’s class.
The Miracle class, an all Birzebbugia Sailing Club podium, had Andrew and Pierre Mifsud coming out top ahead of Edward Flores and Rueben Grima, and Roberto Darmanin and Juanita Darmanin.
In a statement, the Birzebbugia Sailing Club thanked all participants, coaches as well as volunteers who contributed to the successful running of the regatta.
This is the penultimate ranking event in the Malta Sailing Federation’s racing calendar before the summer season.
